Agriculture

We Are an Inherited Farm (since 1766) and Have Been Wine and Fruit Growers for Over 250 Years. Georg pours all his joy into farming, and you can taste it.

Vineyard

The work on the steep slopes and terraced vineyards is still mostly done by hand today. The meticulous care of the vines and environmentally friendly farming methods are a valuable contribution to landscape conservation. As winegrowers, we often see ourselves as landscape gardeners. The small-scale structure of the vineyards is a scenic highlight of this region.

In our vineyard, located on the sunny hillside below the church, the grapes of varieties like Vernatsch (Trollinger), Lagrein, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Ruländer, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Souvignier Gris, and Gewürztraminer ripen. We process a small part of the harvest ourselves and produce three types of wine: a white cuvée – Wais, a Vernatsch, and a cuvée Merlot – Lagrein. These three wines are offered to guests at the Örtlerhof.

The majority of the harvest is brought to the Merano Winery, where the grapes from many regional winegrowers are crafted into excellent wines. Many of these wines can be found on the Örtlerhof wine list. The winery was beautifully renovated in 2013, and the winery tour with tasting at the Merano Winery is a highlight. It takes place from March to November, every Wednesday to Friday at 3:00 PM. In 2022, a City Wine Shop was opened in the heart of Merano.

Apple Growing

South Tyrol is the leading and largest contiguous apple-growing region in Europe. The Örtlerhof manages about 10,000 apple trees. The delicious apple varieties Cosmic Crisp, Red Delicious, Gala, Breaburn, Granny, Weirouge, and Pink Lady thrive in the fields around the Örtlerhof. In the fall, you can enjoy these fruits as fresh apples or as homemade, pure apple juice. You are welcome to purchase these products. The majority of the harvest is delivered to our fruit cooperative CAFA in Merano. You can find many details about apple growing on the Südtiroler Apfel website.

Garden

The Örtlerhof garden is home to many different varieties of fruit (raspberries, goji berries, pears, wine peaches, cherries, peaches, red peaches, apricots, aronia berries, blueberries, plums, sloes, kiwi, persimmons, currants, blackberries, quinces, etc.), vegetables, and herbs (chives, parsley, lemongrass, thyme, oregano, rosemary, chili, mint, lemon balm, savory, wild garlic, olives, etc.).
